Erasmus Trip to Granada, Seville and Cordoba

Andalucía, Beautiful Southern Spain

We perceive Spain as a land of bullfights, flamenco, paella and red dresses with white balls (or the other way around), but actually this isn’t SPAIN itself… This is Andalucía!

Region of beautiful contrasts

In Andalucía, other than bulls and guitars, you will find ancient cities, beautiful paradisaical beaches, snowy mountains (Sierra Nevada, to be precise) and an incredible Moorish heritage, that reflect the eight centuries during when Andalusia was the center of the Arab population in the Iberian peninsula. In the towns of Cordoba, Seville and Granada you will see it clearly: Alhambra Palace, Cordoba’s Mosque and the Alcazar of Seville are the best testimony of the Moorish presence.

Seville, Andalucía Capital
In Seville you will certainly find kind people, great weather, and a lot of flamenco. This is a great town for holidays and it is quite easy to understand why: the city is bursting with beautiful monuments from different ages and cultures. The Cathedral of Seville, the Giralda tower, the Real Alcazar, the Jewish Quarter and the España Square are some of the MUST-SEE. There are also many interesting museums like the Museo de Bella Artes or the Museo de Baile Flamenco, which are perfect for those whom want to learn more about the Andalusian culture and tradition.
Other than that, Seville is also the home of great festivals (like the famous Feria de Sevilla that takes place during the Easter), pure flamenco, amazing nightlife, bullfights and beaches.

Granada
One of the most beautiful cities of Andalucía is Granada, mainly because of the Alhambra Palace that rises like a precious stone from a dense forest. Located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains and at the confluence of four rivers (Beiro, Darro, Genil and Monachil), Granada is one of the most popular destination among the touristic cities of Spain. Besides that, it is also full of students because of its prestigious universities. So you can imagine how great – and cheap! – Nightlife is around here…
After the Alhambra Palace, there are many other attractions that will make you fall in love with this town: the Generalife gardens, the city cathedral, the old royal chapel, the Sacromonte neighborhood and the Charterhouse are great examples.

Cordoba
Although it was founded by the Romans, Cordoba's hour of greatest glory was when it became the capital of the Moorish kingdom of El-Andalus and when the Great Mosque was built.
Cordoba is a small town, great to explore on foot, and even greater if you love historic architecture and the idea of spending a peaceful afternoon in a sunny old plaza.
The Great Mosque is obviously the main attraction in town; however, you can also visit the Jewish Quarter, the Mozarabic (Christian) quarter, the Tendillas main square and the roman bridge.

2014 Andalucía Trip Plan

- We leave at 00:00 on Thursday (10.04.2014). Meeting point: Plaza Catalonia, in front of Hard Rock Café

-
We arrive to Granada around 10:00 (11.04.2014) and stay there for the night.
In Granada we will visit Alhambra, a palace and fortress complex that was built for the last Muslim emirs in Spain. After the visit, you will have the day off to explore the town. You can visit the Cathedral, the Sacromonte caves, the Cartuja monastery and enjoy some free tapas (yes, in Granada you will be able to found it easily!) or a delicious paella, Andalusia style!
At night you can explore Granada’s night life or search for a typical flamenco show! We will offer you free entrance to a club/bar (info soon!)

- After the breakfast in the Hostel, we head up to Seville. We stay in Seville for the night (12.04.2014).
In Seville we will have a guided tour around the city. We will see the San Telmo Palace, some Expo 29 buildings and plazas, the Santa Cruz neighborhood, the Jewish quarter, the typical old city streets... The tour will end with an OPTIONAL visit to the Cathedral (it is the biggest gothic cathedral in the world!). The price to enter the Cathedral is 8€, but, if you are under 25 and have a student card, it will only cost 4€. You should really consider it!
After that, the rest of the day is yours! We recommend you a visit to the Flamenco Museum that includes a flamenco show for the small price of 20€! A great opportunity to learn and appreciate one of the most important Andalusian traditions! Also, we will give you free entrance to a club/bar (info soon!)

- Sunday morning, after breakfast, we head up for Cordoba.
In Cordoba we will visit the biggest town attraction, a medieval Islamic mosque that was converted into a Catholic Christian cathedral. The building is most known for its arcaded hypostyle hall, with 856 columns that will absolutely mesmerize you. After this visit, you will have some free time to explore the city. You can visit the historical city center, the patios, the Jewish quarter and buy some exquisite Andalusian products at the famous store Gourmet Bodegas Mezquita.

- At night we come back to Barcelona (13.04.2014). We will arrive to our beloved Barna around midnight.
